EMDR FAQS

Freedom from fear, anxiety, and trauma

What is EMDR?    Francine Shapiro, Ph.D, developed the technique of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing in the late 1980's.  It is one of the best-researched therapy techniques.  Trauma is processed in our nervous system differently than everyday experience. Once the threshold of tolerance for emotional trauma is crossed the "fight or flight" reponse engages, triggering stress, anger, fear, and avoidance reactions  Often daily functioning becomes impaired.  EMDR has successfully freed many people from the effects of trauma.

Enhances natural healing mechanisms

Why is Eye Movement Necessary?   The eye movement used in this technique is similar to rapid eye movement (REM) experienced during deep sleep.  This phenomenon has been well researched for decades and is linked to information processing and memory function.  REM is the body's naturally occurring way to release tension and stress.  Trauamtic memory, stored in a part of the brain unaffected by REM, keeps the fight or flight response continually triggered.  EMDR creates the link that allows REM to release traumatic memory.

Well researched and effective treatment

How Can EMDR Help Me?  Originally tested with Vietnam veterans exhibiting severe Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), symptoms stayed in remission over the course of a five year study.  EMDR has been adapted with great successs for use with loss and grief issues, panic attacks, depression, anxiety, addictions, childhood trauma, phobias, and crime or accident vicitms.

Fast, enduring results

How Long Does EMDR take?
Across the board EMDR accelerates therapeutic progress.  The complexity of the human psyche makes each case unique.  Frequently even a severe, single incident trauma can be processed in one to five sessions.  Multiple traumas may take longer.

How Long Have You Been Doing EMDR?  Therapeutic outcome has been impressive since 1995 when I began employing this technique.  Clients spend far less time in therapy while gaining enduring results.
